debi maltz varland
Debi was raised in Cincinnati’s rich cultural landscape where her love for art was fostered and later enhanced through her studies and travels to galleries and museums in the U.S. and abroad. Debi’s work explores the emotional force of color within dynamic, architectural space.
She is a graduate of The Univ. of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design, BFA; Miami University, MA; Wright State University, MAT. In addition, she studied at The American Institute for Foreign Studies, Universita de Siene, Sienna, Italy; Fortman Studios, Florence, Italy; and taught Fundamental 3-D Art at Miami University.
Formally trained in painting and drawing, with graduate degrees in art education and art therapy and additional study in Italy, her practice bridges rigorous studio discipline with a deep understanding of visual perception.
Originally grounded in two-dimensional painting, her exploration of positive and negative space evolved into sculptural glass. Moving fluidly between dimensions, she extends the canvas into space—using light, reflection, and structure as active elements. The result is work that is both disciplined and alive with color and energy.
Over 30 years of interpreting and assessing artwork within mental health settings sharpened her sensitivity to the subtle ways color, form, and spatial relationships convey meaning beneath the surface—insight that continues to inform her creative process.
Her artwork has been shown in exhibitions and galleries in the U.S. and abroad. Her work invites viewers to experience color as both structure and emotion.
Debi is a Licensed Professional and Board Certified Registered Art Therapist working in private practice 30 years and a proud mom of 4.
